Favorite Natives for North Central Florida CEU course

This class provided as part of a larger FANN event being held at the nursery in collaboration with the Native Plant Horticulture Foundation.
Registration is required for those seeking continuing education credits. 

Continuing education for landscape architects, designers, installers, retail nurseries.

• 1 optional credit for DBPR registered LAs - PENDING APPROVAL. This class has been submitted for Board of Landscape Architecture review. FANN is licensed by FL DBPR #0005309 to provide continuing education for landscape architects and community association managers.

• 1 credit for FNGLA certified horticulture professionals

Instructor: Troy Springer, Springer Environmental Services

Troy has 29 years of experience in landscaping and landscape maintenance, with a special focus on using native plants, including large meadow areas of wildflowers and grasses. 

This class is a guided onsite walking tour of select Florida native plants presented at the Chiappini Farm Native Nursery in Hawthorne, Florida. The course will introduce 12-15 of the best native herbaceous and woody plants suitable for use in developed landscapes in Central and North Florida, focusing on plants which are now available but tend to be less well known and utilized. For each plant, the instructor will discuss aesthetic, selection and maintenance characteristics. Participants will become familiar with the unique attributes and landscape requirements of the plants, and gain a comfort level needed to incorporate the plants successfully into client landscapes.

This course is appropriate for landscape architects, landscape design professionals and professionals involved in landscape installation and maintenance. It addresses the need to increase both the number and variety of native species in the landscape. Florida has the third greatest diversity of native plants of any state in the U.S. Despite such an expansive palette to select from, relatively few are used with regularity in the landscapes installed in urban and suburban communities. The historical tendency to use non-native plants has reduced both biodiversity and our sense of place.
